None of the demonstrators on the Euromaidan probably imagined that one would still have to die in a European capital while fighting for European values. When the Ukrainian Yanukovych government failed to sign the negotiated Association Agreement with the EU in November 2012, a massive civil protest movement, known as the Euromaidan, began in the capital against a policy that would have plunged the country back into complete dependence on Russia. The bloody climax of the protests was the targeted killings of demonstrators in February 2014. Approximately 100 people were liquidated by snipers. These dead are now referred to as the Heavenly Hundred, mainly young people (but not exclusively from Ukraine), who had to sacrifice their lives for the country’s freedom. <\/p>\n

Naturally, these young people were not demonstrating for the Association Agreement. They fought for a European path for Ukraine and for their future and the future of their children. The protests at the time are also referred to as the Revolution of Dignity. The demonstrators were concerned with personal freedom and self-responsibility, with personal dignity, democracy, and the rule of law. It was about resisting a return to the paternalistic system of the Soviet era. <\/p>\n

The protests were supported by a broad civil movement, not organised by political parties. They aimed to bring about a departure from the rule of the old system. <\/p>\n

The decision by the Coudenhove-Kalergi European Society to award the European Prize 2018 to the \u201cHeavenly Hundred\u201d is an expression of the commitment to European values, to civil and freedom rights, which the Paneuropean Union upholds as one of its fundamental principles. While the awarding of the prize cannot bring back any of the victims who gave their lives for freedom, it is a clear signal that their sacrifice is not forgotten. Europe, a united Europe, is a project of peace. It should not only be a peace project for the EU, but for the whole of Europe. The Revolution of Dignity was arguably one of the decisive events in Ukraine’s recent history. It is also a reminder that Europe must never give up this fight for freedom. It must be won again and again. <\/p>\n
