I am certainly no climate change denier. The symptoms are far too obvious. However, I cannot get on board with the general scaremongering either. After all, it is impossible to ignore that the world has always been in a state of climate change and has endured far more radical shifts than those we see and predict today. This, in turn, should not stop us from taking measures to protect the environment! A commentary by Karl von Habsburg. <\/em><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

One area where climate change as a topic is clearly reaching the end of its shelf life is politics. Here, the subject serves as nothing more than rhetoric for special interest groups. The clear sign that politics no longer stands behind this issue can be seen plainly in the various major climate agreements. As soon as it becomes necessary to enrich the vital climate issue with gender-ideology infusion and questions of equality, one sees what is really at stake: that ‘climate’ is merely an excuse for a brutal transformation of our society. <\/p>\n

Take the Paris Agreement as an example. Here, one reads that climate action must, among other things, take into account themes such as ‘gender equality’, ’empowerment of women’, and ‘intergenerational equity’. All of this in connection with ‘climate justice’. So far, no one has truly been able to explain to me coherently what one has to do with the other. The fact that the topic of climate change is plunging into the abyss of the discussion surrounding socially-just identity politics shows that it has truly lost all its own momentum! <\/p>\n

This development was, however, foreseeable. In 1972, the political scientist Anthony Downs published an article: ‘Up and down with ecology: The Issue-Attention Cycle’. In it, he dealt with the cycle of political single-issue movements long before the Green movements really gained a foothold in the 1980s. <\/p>\n

According to Downs, this life cycle takes place in five stages:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. In the first stage, groups of experts and activists draw public attention to a problem.<\/li>\n
  2. This usually leads relatively quickly to the second stage, in which the media and politicians recognise the issue and seek to co-opt it for themselves. This stage usually involves emotional outbursts; the topic falls into the category of ‘global threat and global salvation’. <\/li>\n
  3. The third stage brings a phase of disillusionment: saving the world may cost more than most are prepared to invest.<\/li>\n
  4. The fourth stage is a gradual transition from the third: a slow decline in the intensity of public interest in the topic. We can already see today, for example, that in surveys about the most important issues moving people, climate change is no longer at the forefront. <\/li>\n
  5. In the fifth stage, according to Downs, the topic is pushed out of the centre of public interest into a kind of grey zone of attention, from which it occasionally flashes up. And Downs predicted exactly this sequence for environmental issues, namely because the costs and effort required to overcome the problems would be so high that even convinced climate activists would begin to doubt the feasibility. <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    It must be particularly painful and annoying for scientists who address climate change out of genuine concern to see how the political Left politicises climate change, thereby also restricting the possibilities for combating it. A topic like climate change can only be addressed on an international level if everyone pulls together. As soon as leftist ideologues mix in other issues, this is no longer possible, and they lose all credibility themselves. <\/p>\n
