According to the government programme, Austria is indeed a \u201chub between East and West.\u201d A commentary by Rainhard Kloucek  <\/em><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The former German Chancellor Gerhard Schr\u00f6der set the precedent. He moved practically directly from the Chancellery to Gazprom. The former Austrian Finance Minister Hans J\u00f6rg Schelling is following suit. Money, after all, doesn&#8217;t stink. As Finance Minister, Schelling was the owner&#8217;s representative for OMV. OMV, in turn, is very closely linked to Gazprom, and Gazprom is part of Russia&#8217;s political strategy. With Nord Stream 2, Gazprom and OMV intend to build a second direct gas pipeline from Russia to Germany. Europe supposedly wants to reduce its dependence on Russian gas. When one considers how Russia has repeatedly used gas as a weapon against countries like Ukraine, simply because they want to escape Moscow&#8217;s tutelage, reducing this dependence seems very sensible.        <\/p>\n<p>Now one might say that two former politicians simply can&#8217;t get enough. Unfortunately, the Schelling affair comes at a time when Russia has, firstly, reactivated the gas weapon against Ukraine (after being sentenced to a billion-euro fine by an international arbitration court), and secondly, is highly suspected of having carried out a poisoning attack on a former KGB spy in Great Britain. The suspicion is strengthened not only because the poison was created in the Soviet Union, but primarily because it aligns with Russia&#8217;s system of governance. The message is clear and unambiguous: We will get you anywhere if you oppose us. It is a demonstration of power. Moscow naturally denies it, but this only demonstrates its internal power. Yes, they even have the power to lie to the rest of the world. Europe should not make the mistake of judging Russia by its own categories.        <\/p>\n<p>It should also be clear to us that we are long since back in the Cold War. Russia is quite honest about this; Sergey Lavrov, the Russian Foreign Minister, admitted it years ago. For Europe, the Cold War means that it must act in political unity. Otherwise, it will be crushed. Of course, one can discuss whether it makes sense to expel Russian diplomats \u2013 yes, it would probably be better to freeze the accounts of some oligarchs, etc. \u2013 as a number of EU countries have done out of solidarity with Great Britain (in response to the poisoning). However, if the Austrian government invokes neutrality and its function as a hub between East and West to declare solidarity with Great Britain in the Council meeting, but then does nothing, then someone has failed in their situation assessment. Russian policy aims to weaken Europe. Through the annexation of Crimea and the invasion of Eastern Ukraine, Moscow is an aggressor against Europe.       <\/p>\n<p>There must be no neutrality between perpetrator and victim. That is cynicism. And an invitation for the perpetrator to continue.  <\/p>\n<p>P.S.
