{"id":5721,"date":"2019-11-09T09:15:37","date_gmt":"2019-11-09T09:15:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pan.thatscommunication.de\/30-years-since-the-fall-of-the-wall-paneuropean-youth-sees-a-warning\/"},"modified":"2026-10-19T21:04:30","modified_gmt":"2026-10-19T21:04:30","slug":"30-years-since-the-fall-of-the-wall-paneuropean-youth-sees-a-warning","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pan.thatscommunication.de\/en\/30-years-since-the-fall-of-the-wall-paneuropean-youth-sees-a-warning\/","title":{"rendered":"30 Years Since the Fall of the Wall: Paneuropean Youth Sees a Warning"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Oppression and political violence must be consigned to the past \u2013 the unjust GDR regime and its crimes should not be celebrated.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Thirty years ago today, the Berlin Wall fell. \u201cIt was more than just a symbol of oppression \u2013 it was an instrument of separation, terror, and torment,\u201d stated Philipp Jauernik, Federal Chairman of Paneuropean Youth Austria, on this day of remembrance. \u201cWe must never forget the suffering caused by oppression in the so-called Eastern Bloc.\u201d History, therefore, should serve as a warning in Austria too, for \u2018Never Again\u2019, against oppression and political violence. \u201cWe owe this to the many who died at all borders of the Iron Curtain.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p>Jauernik finds the tendencies to whitewash the systems behind the Iron Curtain particularly alarming. \u201cThere can be no doubt whatsoever: the GDR was an unjust state. Otherwise, it would not have needed the Wall. A state where law, justice, and freedom prevail does not need a wall to imprison its inhabitants. In free countries, people do not have to risk their lives if they wish to leave,\u201d was his unequivocal message. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThousands of people tried to flee the GDR. Many paid for their attempt with their lives. Shots were fired at the Berlin Wall just as they were along other parts of the Iron Curtain,\u201d Jauernik recalls.
