EU enlargement is clearly in Europe\u2019s strategic interest and must not be a plaything for Macron\u2019s self-interest!<\/em><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u2018The fact that French President Macron is once again blocking the start of negotiations with North Macedonia at the Council summit is a disgrace,\u2019 states Paneuropa Secretary General Rainhard Kloucek.<\/p>\n

\u2018Europe risks losing the reform-oriented, pro-European population in the Balkans through these blockades,\u2019 warns International Officer Stefan Hab\u00f6ck, demanding: \u2018France\u2019s stubborn veto policy is delaying the integration of South-East Europe into the EU\u2019s community of the rule of law by years.\u2019<\/p>\n

North Macedonia has met the conditions; consequently, all EU member states wish to approve the opening of negotiations \u2013 except France.<\/p>\n

President Macron has repeatedly announced his intention to block enlargement until his ideas for restructuring the EU are implemented.<\/p>\n

North Macedonia was granted candidate status in 2005; in 2018, France and the Netherlands once again blocked the start of talks. Following years of pressure from Greece, the country underwent a painful name change. <\/p>\n

\u2018It is now time to honour the Macedonians for their immense efforts towards a peaceful solution,\u2019 says Rainhard Kloucek.<\/p>\n

The start of negotiations is by no means an accession. It is a process that spans many years, during which over 30 chapters are worked through step by step. If EU states wish to be credible in their Southeast Europe policy (\u201cWestern Balkans policy\u201d), then reform efforts must be rewarded and promises kept. <\/p>\n

The integration of Southeast Europe is of enormous importance from an economic, security policy, and rule of law perspective. Too many non-European powers are already seeking to exert their influence in the region. <\/p>\n
