Event for the Day of Remembrance for the Fallen Defenders of Ukraine
On 29 August 2025, a candlelight vigil will take place in Vienna in partnership with the Paneuropean Movement Austria to mark the Day of Remembrance for the fallen defenders of Ukraine.
📍 Location: Maria-Theresien-Platz, Vienna
🕰 Time: 19:30 – 21:00
This initiative commemorates all those who gave their lives for the independence and freedom of Ukraine. 29 August was chosen as the day of remembrance as it is inseparably linked to the tragedy of Ilovaisk in 2014, when hundreds of Ukrainian soldiers were attacked and killed by Russian troops during an agreed humanitarian corridor. The symbol of this day is the sunflower.
The commemorative event in Vienna includes candlelight, flowers, and memorial tables, which not only pay tribute to the victims but also make solidarity with Ukraine visible. The aim of the initiative is to remind both the Ukrainian community and the international public that Ukrainian soldiers are defending Europe against the despotism of dictatorial states.
The initiative is being carried out in cooperation with the following venues/institutions:
1. Coffee Junkie Kirchengasse
Kirchengasse 21, 1070 Vienna
2. Elvira’s
Elviras Restaurant, Seidlgasse 39, 1030 Vienna
3. Warenyk Haus Daheim
Operngasse 18, 1040 Vienna
4. Grnd Restaurant
Kärtner Straße 61, 1010 Vienna
5. Markt 44a

With this joint initiative, we are sending a clear signal: Austria and the Ukrainian diaspora stand side by side in remembrance, in solidarity, and in commitment to freedom and peace in Europe.
