The Paneuropean Movement was founded by Richard Coudenhove-Kalergi in 1922. He stood at the helm of the movement for half a century. In 1957, Otto von Habsburg was elected Vice President of the Paneuropean Union. Following the founder’s death in 1972, Otto von Habsburg was elected in 1973 as his successor at the head of the oldest European unification movement. He led the organization until the end of 2004. Both personalities embodied a European identity; neither could be reduced to a single nation.
