Press release on the European Commission’s proposal to open accession talks with North Macedonia and Albania.

The Paneuropean Movement Austria welcomes the European Commission’s decision to open accession negotiations with Albania and North Macedonia. North Macedonia, in particular, has earned this, having made peace with Greece. In 2018, France and the Netherlands still blocked the start of talks.

“On 18th June, the heads of state and government must approve this to clearly signal to the people of Southeast Europe that they are part of the European family,” said Secretary General Rainhard Kloucek.

“What Europe cannot afford is a reform-oriented, yet frustrated by blockades, pro-European population in the Balkans,” warns International Officer Stefan Haböck, particularly regarding frustration among the young population in the Balkans.

Note: The Paneuropean Movement Austria is the Austrian organisation of the non-partisan Paneuropean Union. Founded in 1922 by Richard Coudenhove-Kalergi, it is the oldest European unification movement with 24 organisations in 22 European states.
